FAQ

Q
Do I need to be there during the training?
A: Yes! Dog training is really about teaching you how to communicate with and guide your dog. It’s important that you learn the skills during our sessions so you can continue reinforcing the training after I leave. Otherwise, the dog may only behave well for me and not understand what you’re asking of them at home.
Q
How many training sessions will I need?
A: The first session goes wide — it’s a 2-hour overview where we explore your dog’s history, behaviors, and training goals. I do my best to touch on all your concerns and give you practical steps to get started. Some clients feel this session is all they need if they’re working on just a few minor behaviors.

Follow-up sessions go deep. They give us time to build on what we started, refine skills, troubleshoot issues in real time, and create lasting change.
It just depends on how much support you need throughout your training journey and how complex the issues with your dog are.
Q
What age should my dog be to start training?
A: It’s never too early—or too late—to start! I work with puppies as young as 8 weeks and adult dogs of all ages. Early training helps build a solid foundation, but even older dogs can learn new behaviors and improve their habits.
Because the private sessions are done in your home there is no vaccine requirement to get started. Your puppy will need to complete their puppy series of shots before joining a group class or pack walk.
Q
What should I have ready for our training session?
A: To get the most out of your session, please have:
-
High-value treats your dog loves (avoid biscuit-style treats; soft, single-ingredient treats like freeze-dried liver or chicken work great)
-
Your current gear – leashes, collars, harnesses, or any training tools you currently use
-
A list of goals or questions (optional, but helpful for staying focused)
No worries if you’re not sure what you need — I’ll also bring a variety of treats and training tools so we have plenty to work with.
Q
Can multiple family members join the training session?
A: Absolutely! It’s helpful when everyone who interacts with your dog learns the same skills and commands. The more consistent your household is, the faster your dog will learn.
Q
Can I bring my dog to the monthly pack walk if they’re reactive?
A: Possibly! I generally recommend reactive dogs attend after a private session. This lets me assess whether the group setting will be a safe and productive experience for them.
Q
What training methods do you use?
A: I follow a LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) approach, focusing primarily on positive reinforcement, with occasional corrections when appropriate. My goal is to build trust, communication, and confidence between you and your dog.
Q
Do you train all breeds and sizes?
A: I work with dogs of all breeds, sizes, and temperaments. From tiny Chihuahuas to giant breeds, I tailor my training approach to fit your dog’s individual needs and personality.
Q
How much do your services cost?
A: I aim to be transparent about pricing. You can find all current rates listed on my website under each service category.
